Choosing Books and Medical Charts: Acupuncture
![]() |
Are you considering entering the field of acupuncture? If so, then you should definitely look at books and medical charts, acupuncture maps and other helpful resources. This will give you a good basis on which to begin your education. There are many available educational resources found in libraries, bookstores and even online. Let's first talk about the charts and maps you may come into contact with on your quest for knowledge. These charts and maps are a helpful resource for anyone who wants to know more about how acupuncture works.
The basic acupuncture map or chart will show the human body and illustrate the points where the needles are inserted to stimulate various functions. There are over 360 points that you will see illustrated. You may notice that the area where the needles are placed is not the same area where the problem is happening. This is a very similar to the theory of reflexology which uses the manipulation of points on the hands and feet to affect different parts of the body. With acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology, points are manipulated and stimulated to cause effects in specific parts of the body. People often get these therapies for the purposes of pain relief, weight loss and even to release addictions.
Many of the acupuncture textbooks out there will contain illustrated charts for you to use. There are lots of different titles out there for students of this practice. One book that contains a variety of charts is Standard Meridian Points of Acupuncture which was written and released by an institute of acupuncture in China. Another similar title is Finding Effective Acupuncture Points by Denmei Shudo. For a more broad view of Chinese medicine, check out Navigating the Channels of Chinese Medicine by Yitian Ni.
Medical charts, acupuncture books and other helpful resources should be provided to you when you attend an educational facility. However, you may also want to purchase other items to enhance the materials your receive as part of your education. If you are already a licensed, practicing acupuncture provider, reading up on the subject can keep you on your toes and reinforce what you already know.
