The Basics of Ancient Chinese Acupuncture

Ancient Chinese acupuncture originates all the way back to the B.C. times. Wise men and sages in ancient China observed the flow of energy and how it relates to the human body. One of the most famous, a sage named Fu Hsi, realized that energy came in two basic forms -- creation and reception. This can be likened to give and take, negative and positive, yin and yang. It is this basic principle that is the basis of acupuncture. This alternative medical practice uses needles to stimulate various parts of the body.

The needles were first made from bone, but eventually were crafted from various types of metal. These days, they are made from sterile metal. They are hair thin, rounded and solid. This means that when they are inserted into your skin, there is little to no pain. During an acupuncture session, there may be clusters of these tiny needles placed in median points which will vary depending on your individual goals. There are over 300 areas of the body that can be needled. The needles will stay in for an average of 45 minutes, during which time you can meditate, listen to music or sometimes even watch TV. Although it sounds painful, the needles are so thin and crafted in such a way that you can hardly feel them at all.

Some holistic healers will also use herbs and aromatherapy as part of a total body healing process. For example, if you are seeking acupuncture for detoxification purposes, your practitioner may also integrate stimulating aromas like peppermint and herbal tonics like milk thistle and licorice root to enhance the results of the acupuncture. For weight loss, you might be told to sniff a sweet, satisfying vanilla fragrance and told to drink a spicy ginger cayenne tea which can help enhance the metabolism boosting properties of an acupuncture session.

Traditional Chinese acupuncture is not just performed in China. There are a countless number of qualified practitioners in the United States. Check your local Yellow Pages to find a professional in your area. Upon your initial consultation, you can ask any questions that you may have and find out more about how the procedure works, how much it costs, how long it will take and how many sessions you will need.
