A Primer on Acupuncture Laws are something you should be very familiar with if you plan to pursue a career in acupuncture or are already practicing this form of holistic healing. There are a variety of laws in the United States which may vary from state to state regarding the practice of acupuncture. It is important that you know the particular laws for your state. Every practitioner should not only be familiar with the laws, but should also have an attorney who is knowledgeable in the area of alternative medicine. You may never need the services of your attorney, but you should have one just in case.
Now let's examine some of the laws in various states around the U.S. In Alabama, there are no state laws or regulations. There is, however, a statue introduced by the Alabama Association of Oriental Medicine. In California, there is a state acupuncture board. This board consists of qualified members who make acupuncture rules and regulations and enforce consequences for non-compliance. California requires practitioners to possess licensure and certification by a board approved educational facility. In Oklahoma, only M.D.s and D.O.s are permitted to practice acupuncture without any specific training or certification. Chiropractors can practice acupuncture if they obtain the proper education and licensing.
Understanding the acupuncture regulations of your state are important not only if you are a practitioner, but important if you are a patient as well. Before you go to a practitioner in your state, do some research on the laws. Also, make sure any acupuncturist you are considering is adhering to these laws. If there are no regulations in your state, you should carefully consider the particular education and experience of an acupuncturist before deciding whether or not to allow them to work on you.
A Primer on Acupuncture Laws exist to protect both patients and practitioners. However, there is much to be desired in many states regarding this issue. As holistic and alternative medicine becomes more widespread and popular, one can only hope that the state governments keep up and update their requirements. Another area where improvement is needed is Western medicine. More M.D.s should learn more about alternative medicine to better serve their patients. Advances in alternative healing are happening every day, so it's only a matter of time before more effective education in this area for all doctors and regulation in more U.S. states will be implemented.
